USING CHLORINE GRANULES (CALCIUM HYPOCHLORITE)

​​FOR DISINFECTION

MATERIALS
​NEEDED

  • Bucket / Pail
  • 70% Chlorine granules​ ​(calcium hypochlorite)
  • Water
  • PPE (Personal Protective Equipment - goggles, face mask, gloves)

WARNING:

  • DO NOT DRINK chlorine water or PUT chlorine water in mouth or eyes
  • DO NOT MIX OTHER CHEMICALS in the chlorine solution
  • CHLORINE GRANULES will burn if a small amount of water / sweat was dropped into the drum
  • Handler of chlorine solution should be wearing proper PPE.
  • Storage: unused chlorine solution should be stored in a dry shaded place. DO NOT store in direct sunlight.
  • Wait 30 minutes before using any chlorine solution that is made from powder.
  • Chlorine solutions, depending on their use, should be transferred into bottles that have spray bottles or into dispensers that have spigots.
  • Chlorine solutions do not work as well on heavily soiled surfaces. Clean first, then disinfect.​
  • Chlorine solutions lose strength over time, so make a fresh batch every day.
  • Advantage: Inexpensive & fast acting
  • Disadvantage: CORROSIVE TO METALS. We suggest to rinse off with water after immersion in chlorine solution
  • Disadvantage: Calcium particles may clog spray nozzle
  • Suggested Immersion Contact Time (for medical instruments / equipments): 10 minutes
  • ​DO NOT REVERSE THE PROCEDURE (ie do not add water to chlorine)

LOW LEVEL DISINFECTION
​(~100ppm)

  • Kills some bacteria, fungi & viruses. Does not kill bacterial spores
  • Dilute 0.0028kg (2.8grams) to 20liters of water in bucket
  • Stir until granules have dissolved​. Wait for 30 minutes before use​
  • Recommended Uses:
    • ​​​Safe level for dishes, utensils and food contact surfaces
    • Poultry House cleaning (max at 200ppm)
    • ​Foot Baths
    • Use on non-critical items.
    • Items that contact intact skin and not mucous membranes.

intermediate level disinfection
​(~500PPM)

  • Kills most bacteria, fungi, viruses & mycobacteria (tuberculocidal). Does not kill bacterial spores.
  • Dilute 0.014kg (14grams) to 20liters of water in bucket
  • Stir until granules have dissolved. Wait for 30 minutes before use​
  • Recommended Uses:
    • ​For use on non-critical medical or personal service instruments
    • Foot Baths
    • Everyday cleaning of surfaces and floors when there is no visible body fluids
    • Use on semi-critical items.
    • Items that come into contact with non-intact skin or mucous membranes but do not penetrate them.

intermediate to high level disinfection (~1000ppm)

  • Kills most bacteria, fungi, viruses & mycobacteria (tuberculocidal). Does not kill bacterial spores.
  • Dilute 0.028kg (28grams) to 20liters of water in bucket
  • Stir until granules have dissolved
  • Wait for 30 minutes before use​
  • Recommended Uses:
    • ​For use in washrooms, change tables, outbreaks of respiratory diseases or vomiting and diarrhea
    • Use on semi-critical items.
    • Items that come into contact with non-intact skin or mucous membranes but do not penetrate them.

high level disinfection
​(~5000ppm)

  • Kills all bacteria, fungi & viruses. Does not kill bacterial spores.
  • Dilute 0.14kg (140 grams) to 20liters of water in bucket
  • Stir until granules have dissolved
  • Wait for 30 minutes before use
  • Recommended Uses:
    • ​Cleaning up blood or body fluid spill
    • For use on semi-critical medical and personal service instruments
    • Use on semi-critical items
    • Items that come into contact with non-intact skin or mucous membranes but do not penetrate them.
